It's already supported by many browsers and allows pages to draw vector graphics without the need for plug-ins like Flash and Silverlight. Local database within browser is also coming - this will help with caching and working offline. Until it is ready, developers can continue using Google Gears, which seems to offer pretty much the same thing. Another HTML 5 element worth mentioning is Canvas.
