LOLA, a leading flowers and gifts retailer in Maldives, is a brand name that had brought a revolution in the floral industry of Maldives. It is currently the biggest importer of flowers and plants from Europe, South America, Miami, South Africa and Thailand. Lola is also the largest online gift solution provider for a one-stop shopping.
LOLA uses environmentally friendly flowers that are grown in the flower farms, which follow stringent growing practices that are monitored by multiple certification agencies and associations. LOLA collaborates with selected merchants/flower farms in Miami, Ecuador, South Africa and Holland.
Lola had a website that displayed only static images of gifts and flowers they had. Besides, it was not possible to add products, categories, promotions etc. to their website through their existing administration panel without the help of a developer.
The lack of provisions for online purchasing was a hurdle in Lola’s growth. The customers either had to place an order with them over the phone or had to walk into their outlets to purchase products. Further, entering into the world of social networking was a distant dream to Lola then, when social channels were actually playing crucial roles in online marketing and promotions.
Lola sensed the need of shifting to online mode of trade. They realized that it could bring more business and customers in and increase Lola’s overall popularity. However, shifting to this mode of business was a challenge to Lola. They needed expert advice and a cost-effective solution to go forward with that plan.
Our solution was to develop an eCommerce application to Lola. The project was subdivided into different modules:
Considering that Lola needed an application that was cost effective and reliable, Magento open-source eCommerce platform was suggested.
As a step towards simplifying the process of searching and buying products, product catalog and shopping cart were implemented. For enabling smooth and secure transactions, a secure payment gateway was set up with Bank of Maldives, where the client had an account.
In addition to that, social networking applications like Facebook, Twitter, Blogger etc. were integrated with the site. Facebook Connect, a feature of Facebook, enables logged-in users to order products using their Facebook credentials. This helped Lola promote their products extensively through social networking sites.
Some of the features of this application include the following.

Magento is a feature-rich, professional open-source eCommerce solution that offers merchants complete flexibility and control over the look, content, and functionality of their online store.
PHP is a widely used general-purpose scripting language that was originally designed for web development to produce dynamic web pages.
MySQL is an open source relational database management system that runs as a server providing multi-user access to the underlying databases.
The client found it very convenient to add products, categories, advertisements, promotions etc. to their website. The application saved them time and effort.
Reliability of payment gateway system was an additional element that pulled in customers to Lola. The integration of the website with social networking applications opened trade windows for Lola in a significant way.
The popularity of the website increased mainly due to the attractiveness, convenience and self-serving capability it provides to the customers.
