Challenges: The Accumulative Latency of Legacy Ingestion

The client’s weather pipeline suffered from linear processing dependency, causing systemic strain as their market share expanded:

  • Severe Hindcast Restrictions: A strict 180-day retrieval wall prevented data scientists from training highly accurate, long-term forecasting models.
  • Onboarding Bottlenecks: Because the legacy system processed weather metrics vessel-by-vessel, backfilling duration grew proportionally with the number of ships added, stalling commercial onboarding times.
  • Analytics Starvation: Historical safety reports and machine learning models lacked the depth of data necessary to provide reliable multi-year structural comparisons.
  • Operational Latency: Adding large batches of commercial vessels caused severe computational queues, slowing down downstream analytics and automated operational reporting.

QBurst Solution: Shifting to Time-Based Parallelized Pipelines

QBurst completely overhauled the data engineering topology. Rather than treating each vessel as a separate data thread, we built a highly parallelized ingestion pipeline that divides historical requests into distinct time windows.

The architectural transformation focused on decoupled scale:

  • Time-Window Workload Distribution: The infrastructure was re-programmed to partition historical data into chunks grouped by dates and ranges rather than hardware IDs.
  • Parallel Processing Core: Constructed a processing cluster that handles overlapping intervals simultaneously, feeding information from multiple weather providers into a unified data lake.
  • Elastic Scale Isolation: Decoupled the relationship between fleet size and execution latency. Whether processing data for 1 vessel or over 10 vessels across a 1-year window, the cluster executes the pipeline in nearly identical timeframes.
  • Extensible Storage Core: Re-engineered database indexing configurations to store up to 5 years of historical high-frequency hindcast entries smoothly, leaving open conduits to scale beyond that threshold as required.

  • Consistent-Time Onboarding Engine: Performance is completely insulated from asset spikes, ensuring stable operational predictability.
  • High-Accuracy Geospatial Mapping: Precision synchronization of latitude, longitude, and timestamp weather plots with historical vessel route tracks.
