Transforming Bedside Care with a Native iOS Clinical Rounding Solution

Eliminating documentation delays and workstation dependencies through a secure, biometric-enabled iOS application built directly on enterprise healthcare frameworks.

Client

A world-class academic medical center and clinical health system headquartered in New York City, operating high-pressure care environments where immediate data access directly impacts patient outcomes.

Problem Statement

Clinical floor staff performing daily patient rounds had no mobile mechanism to log encounters or review histories. Providers relied exclusively on static desktop workstations, causing documentation delays, reliance on memory, and disjointed care team coordination.

Quick Summary

We designed and delivered a native, secure iOS application optimized for iPhone and iPad to digitize point-of-care clinical rounding.

  • Eliminated the architectural need for high-maintenance middleware by interfacing directly with the client's existing enterprise backend APIs.
  • Integrated Apple’s LocalAuthentication framework to enable high-frequency Face ID and Touch ID biometric logins, maintaining absolute regulatory compliance.

Client Profile

This premier New York City academic health system supports thousands of active nurses, physicians, and patient relations coordinators. Their established IT ecosystem relies on strict, proprietary mobile frameworks for underlying data orchestration, network connectivity, and keychain management—demanding that any new digital asset integrate natively within their security architecture.

Challenges: Desktop Workstation Bottlenecks and Login Friction

Bedside medical documentation suffered from severe operational latency due to physical workspace limitations:

  • Delayed Point-of-Care Logging: Documenting rounding visits hours after the event via central desktops introduced data lag and increased the risk of omitting subtle clinical context.
  • High-Frequency Authentication Friction: Forcing clinicians to repeatedly type complex alphanumeric passwords while moving between high-pressure patient rooms slowed down rounding workflows.
  • Restricted Mobile Discovery: Providers were blocked from capturing notes for patients outside their pre-assigned department lists due to the absence of an on-the-go global directory.
  • Architectural Middleware Rejection: The client's IT infrastructure teams explicitly barred the introduction of secondary translation servers or intermediary middleware layers.
  • Rigorous Security Demands: The mobile platform required strict, HIPAA-aligned end-to-end data protection, including encrypted token storage at rest and secure biometric enclaves.

QBurst Solution: Integrated Native iOS Rounding Platform

We engineered a high-fidelity native application built entirely in Swift targeting iOS 15.6+. By utilizing the client's proprietary networking and cryptographic libraries directly, the solution establishes a streamlined, middleware-free link to core clinical databases.

The application unifies the end-to-end rounding lifecycle through five core features:

  1. Synchronized Bedside Encounter Ingestion

Clinicians access a dynamically updated, real-time roster of assigned patients, mapped by active room and bed locations. CRM interactions, "Meet & Greet" checklists, and general rounding notes are documented directly at the bedside in seconds, feeding data instantly into the central system of record.

  2. Biometric LocalAuthentication

To remove login hurdles on active clinical floors, the application leverages Apple's native LocalAuthentication framework. Providers securely bypass manual passwords using Face ID or Touch ID, communicating directly with the hardware's secure enclave to speed up bedside data access.

  3. Enterprise Global Patient Search

To prevent documentation blockages when crossing clinical divisions, we programmed a hospital-wide patient lookup algorithm. Staff can rapidly locate, verify, and log interactions for any active patient across the health system, even if the individual is missing from their localized daily roster.

  4. Hardened AES-256 Token Encryption

The application maintains strict data privacy boundaries by utilizing the native iOS Keychain subsystem. All active authentication tokens and cryptographic keys are secured at rest using AES-256 encryption, ensuring that zero patient health information (PHI) or system credentials escape the secure perimeter.

  5. Automated Stability Observability

We integrated Firebase and Crashlytics modules directly into the deployment bundle. This configuration provides internal enterprise infrastructure teams with real-time analytics on production runtime health, instantly flagging memory issues or interface drops across heavy clinical shifts.

Key Features and Technical Highlights

  • Swift Native Development: Crafted for modern iOS 15.6+ environments to guarantee maximum multi-touch responsiveness, fluid transitions, and long-term OS backward compatibility.
  • Middleware-Free Routing: Connects natively to core systems, simplifying the network architecture and maintaining feature parity with legacy desktop systems.
  • HIPAA-Aligned Key Protection: Restricts session data storage to the device's hardware-isolated secure enclave to safeguard enterprise access tokens.
  • Proprietary Library Harmonization: Smoothly embeds the client’s legacy networking blueprints without rewriting shared core infrastructure.

Impact

  • Closed the Documentation Gap: Transitioning to in-room encounter logging enabled clinical teams to log data immediately, capturing highly precise details directly at the point of care.
  • Eliminated App Fragmentation: Consolidating user lists, interaction entries, CRM records, and global lookups into a single mobile space drastically reduced administrative context switching.
  • Removed Shift-Time Friction: Implementing biometric validation bypassed tedious passcode typing, saving valuable minutes per round without compromising compliance guidelines.
  • Simplified System Architecture: Direct API connectivity kept the platform light, ensuring long-term maintainability within the organization’s native mobile portfolio.
  • Proactive Operational Transparency: Live Crashlytics logging gave enterprise IT administrators complete oversight over fleet stability, maintaining continuous application uptime during critical shifts.
