Mobile-friendly Website Promoting Energy Efficient Products

Project Overview

The client runs an independent testing laboratory that provides energy ratings on popular electrical appliances. They approached QBurst to develop a website that would enable consumers to locate and purchase green products in the market. We successfully developed desktop and mobile versions of the client website, which helped them increase their customer base in the United States.

Business Requirement

  • The client required desktop and mobile websites that would help customers find shops near them that sell energy-efficient products.
  • They also needed a separate website for retailers to register their stores on the energy saving network and make green labeled products available to their consumers.

Features

  • Consumer Portal - Desktop Version
    • The portal provides an overview of the client’s services with a few static pages and a blog.
    • The search feature lists shops that sell energy-rated products in the searched location based on zip code, city or state.
    • The blog features articles on the latest company news along with updates from the energy sector.
  • Consumer Portal - Mobile Version
    • Consumers can register with the website to view detailed information of energy-rated products under various categories such as air conditioners, ovens, and coffee makers.
    • Consumers need to scan the QR code on the client’s energy rating label or simply type in the 5-digit product code to view information such as total energy consumed, energy wastage, recyclability, energy cost, and so on.
    • Consumers can subscribe to energy ratings of products in the nearest store based on zip code and also check other stores to find better rated products.
    • The website supports all popular mobile platforms like iPhone, iPad, Android, and BlackBerry.
  • Retailer Portal
    • The retailer portal is accessible only to retailers who are registered as partners with the client.
    • Registered retailers are provided with energy rating labels with QR codes for each product they sell.
    • Retailers can create more energy rating labels by downloading the PDF format from the portal.
  • Admin panel
    • To manage the three websites, we modified the Magento admin panel for the client.
    • Using the admin panel, the administrators can manage the product content, provide energy ratings to products, manage payment gateway configurations, maintain subscriptions, manage retailer profiles, and so on.
  • Social Media Marketing
    • We created profiles for the client in popular social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and created several Facebook applications to get more ‘Likes.’
    • We conducted energy contests for the client, which were designed to go viral and increase website traffic.
    • These pages can be controlled from the Magento admin panel.

Client Profile

The client is an environmental enthusiast who founded a laboratory that uses a unique technology to provide energy ratings and information on energy usage of household appliances. These help individuals and businesses to choose energy-saving and eco-friendly alternatives while shopping.

QBurst Solution

QBurst designed and developed a consumer portal as well as a retailer portal. The consumer portal is a static website that resizes itself based on the device from which it is accessed (Responsive Design). The retailer portal is exclusively for owners of retail chains who wish to feature energy ratings for their products.

Technologies

  • PHP
  • Magento
  • Wordpress
  • PayPal
  • MySQL
  • JavaScript

Development

We used Magento to create and control multiple websites from a single administration panel and modified a free extension for Magento to detect and switch between desktop and mobile versions. Responsive web technology realigns the mobile website to match the dimensions of any mobile device.

Magento eCommerce framework was used to display product lists and enable category-based search. WordPress was used to build the blog.

All three websites are powered by MySQL database. MySQL was chosen for better performance and scalability. We customized PayPal to implement payment gateway in the mobile version of the consumer portal for plan subscription. Responsive web design and QR code reading features greatly contributed to the success of the project and all three websites were deployed in a very short time.

End Result

  • The client successfully converted their business idea into reality, helping preserve the environment by encouraging consumers to purchase and use eco-friendly products.
  • The website helps consumers search and find products that are safe and eco-friendly.
  • With the responsive web design and QR code reading features, consumers are now able to make environment-friendly decisions at the point of sale.
