This regional feature spotlights Shivkumar Subramaniam, Head - Middle East, as he outlines the digital evolution of one of the world's most dynamic luxury markets. This conversation comes on the heels of QBurst’s strategic partnership with XY Retail, a collaboration designed to help Middle Eastern luxury retailers overcome their legacy tech debt and unify their commerce operations. The Middle East has become one of the world's most important luxury retail markets. What makes this region unique? In the three decades that I’ve lived and worked here, I’ve seen Dubai evolve from a regional trading hub into one of the world's leading luxury retail destinations. It is a remarkable transformation that has been built through vision, investment, infrastructure, and a relentless focus on customer experience. One of the things that sets this region apart is its reach. Customers travel here specifically to shop, arriving from across the GCC, the wider Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, Africa, and increasingly Central Asia. On any given day, a store in Dubai may serve customers from several continents within a few hours. The customers—who include affluent residents, high-spending visitors, and a young, digitally connected generation with strong brand awareness—are among the most well-travelled consumers in the world and benchmark their experiences against destinations such as Paris, Milan, Tokyo, and London. As a result, expectations extend well beyond the product itself. Customers expect personalization, exclusivity, convenience, and seamless experiences across both physical and digital channels. For these reasons, I no longer view the Middle East as simply an important luxury market. The combination of global consumer traffic, cultural diversity, strong purchasing power, tourism-led demand, and an unwavering focus on customer experience has made it one of the most important growth markets for luxury brands globally and a region where many retail innovations are now being tested and scaled. What led QBurst and XY Retail to partner in the Middle East? The partnership reflects where retail is heading and what retailers in this region keep asking for. Over the years, I have watched them invest heavily in customer experience, digital channels, loyalty, and omnichannel. The vision is rarely the problem. The hard part is connecting it to the operations, systems, data, and processes that make it work. Retailers want to modernize without adding complexity, with visibility across the business, a consistent experience across channels, the ability to scale, and above all, real outcomes rather than another technology rollout. That is where this partnership fits. XY Retail brings deep expertise in luxury retail and unified commerce, and QBurst brings strength in digital engineering, cloud, integration, data, and AI. And we know what it takes to execute at scale. QBurst recently delivered a large-scale loyalty transformation for one of the region's leading conglomerates, bringing more than 70 brands across the GCC onto a single cloud-native platform. We built real-time synchronization between POS, CRM, and payment systems, allowing them to onboard millions of customers seamlessly. That is what excites me here. XY Retail's retail expertise, paired with QBurst's ability to engineer, integrate, and scale complex ecosystems, means we can help retailers close the gap between strategy and execution, which is where real transformation actually happens. Despite significant investments in customer experience, many luxury brands still struggle to deliver seamless journeys. Why? The biggest issue is that customer experience and operational systems often evolve separately. A brand may invest heavily in digital experiences, loyalty programs, or personalization initiatives. But when a customer walks into a store, the associate still doesn't have access to a complete view of that customer. Inventory data may sit in one system, customer data in another, and order history somewhere else. We recently addressed this issue for a global luxury fashion house. Their fashion advisors were highly skilled, but their tools only provided fragmented client data. We transformed their clienteling into an intelligence-driven engagement layer. By consolidating data across transactions, browsing behavior, and interactions into a unified platform, we shifted the business from relying on individual advisor memory to institutional brand memory. The industry has shifted from talking about omnichannel to talking about unified commerce. Why does that distinction matter? For many years, omnichannel was about connecting channels. Unified commerce is about connecting the business. In an omnichannel environment, retailers may have multiple systems exchanging information. In a unified commerce environment, everyone works from the same source of truth. A store associate can see inventory across locations. Customer profiles remain consistent regardless of where interactions happen. Orders can be fulfilled intelligently from different locations. Decisions happen in real time. From our perspective, unified commerce is becoming the operational foundation for modern retail. Where are you seeing measurable business impact for AI? AI adoption is accelerating in the Middle East because the vision is being set at a government level. The UAE, for example, has made AI a national priority with ambitious targets for AI-enabled services. This is a region that has consistently embraced technology-led transformation, whether it was e-commerce, mobile-first services, digital payments, or cloud adoption. We are now seeing measurable AI impact in areas such as demand forecasting, inventory optimization, customer intelligence, and clienteling. Retailers are moving beyond reporting and embedding AI directly into business operations to improve decision-making, reduce inventory waste, optimize stock levels, and deliver more personalized customer experiences. Looking ahead, how do you see Agentic Commerce reshaping luxury retail operations? Traditional e-commerce and basic AI are reactive: a customer searches, and the system responds. These could audit supply chains, identify an inventory shortage of a trending handbag in Riyadh, interact with logistics agents to reroute stock from an underperforming market, and simultaneously alert the clienteling system to notify the top matching VIPs in Saudi Arabia.
